Our Partners

As a cooperative, Central Co-op is guided by seven internationally recognized principles. It is the seventh principle – concern for community – that guides our partnerships with Black Dollar Days Task Force, Community Alliance for Global Justice, Seattle Good Business Network, Seattle Tilth Association, and Sustainable Capitol Hill.

Black Dollar Days Task Force

Since 1988, Black Dollar Days Task Force has promoted the principles of self-help and self-determination through economic justice, decreasing social service dependency through people-based community and economic revitalization. Financial institutions that serve people who have been historically denied access to economic opportunity; the Buy Local Coalition which annually organizes buy local events; and the Clean Greens Farm and Market Project, a Duvall-based farm-to-Central-Area-market arrangement that produces holistically grown vegetables culturally relevant to African-American and African immigrant communities, effectively meet unique community needs.

Community Alliance for Global Justice

Community Alliance for Global Justice (CAGJ) unites individuals and organizations in Seattle and throughout the region who believe the global economy should embody core values of social justice, environmental sustainability, self-determination and democracy. CAGJ was born of the 1999 World Trade Organization protests to carry forward the fight against free trade policy. The organization's current focus is to develop alternatives to the industrial food system through its Food Justice Project, AGRA Watch, Trade Justice Project, and annual Strengthening Local Economies Everywhere Dinner and Fair. CAGJ identifies local and global impacts of trade and monetary institutions, and uses education, grassroots mobilization, and media and legislative strategies to build solidarity across diverse movements and transform the global economy.

Community Coalition for Environmental Justice

To achieve environmental and economic justice in low income communities and communities of color” is the mission of the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice (CCEJ), a Seattle organization with more than 15 years of successful organizing to build grassroots community power for public and environmental health. This year’s partnership restores a longstanding relationship between Central Co-op and a revitalized CCEJ. Volunteer-based and activist-oriented, CCEJ embodies the commitment to grassroots democracy, social and environmental sustainability, and community accountability that motivate Central Co-op’s community partnerships.

Seattle Good Business Network

Seattle Good Business Network (SGBN) is the successor organization to the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies Seattle (BALLE) with whom Central Co-op has partnered for several years. Shifting to a membership-based organization providing services to its members, SGBN upholds the BALLE legacy and partners with Central Co-op on the annual Strengthening Local Independent Co-ops Everywhere (SLICE) conference in October.

Seattle Tilth Association

Born in 1978, the same year as Central Co-op, Seattle Tilth is the leading promoter in our city of education and empowerment for urban organic food production. Based at their extensive gardens at the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford, Tilth is expanding its reach throughout Seattle’s neighborhoods to meet the growing popular demand for practical food gardening skills. This year’s partnership builds on past educational events Tilth has presented at the co-op including starting from seeds, container gardening, and preserving the harvest.

Sustainable Capitol Hill

Sustainable Capitol Hill (SCH) is a network of neighbors, businesses, and community groups dedicated to making Capitol Hill a sustainable community. A member organization of SCALLOPS (Sustainable Communities All Over Puget Sound), SCH is working to create a vital neighborhood - one with strong connections between people, place, and the local ecosystem. This year’s projects include tree planting, disaster preparedness, greening the Capitol Hill Block Party, and a monthly potluck with presentations from key players in the local sustainability movement.
