Pollinator Week

Monday, June 18 - Sunday, June 24

Pollinators are vital to our food system, and we are proud to be affiliated with Bee City USA, to spread awareness of their importance. We collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations in advocacy efforts to save and educate the community about pollinators.

Ten years ago the U.S. Senate’s unanimous approval and designation of a week in June as “National Pollinator Week” marked a necessary step toward addressing the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations. Pollinator Week has now grown into an international celebration of the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles.

June 18-24 we join people across the country in appreciating bees and other pollinators and their important role in our environment. Pollinators are often keystone species, meaning that they are critical to an ecosystem. The work of pollinators ensures full harvests of crops and contributes to healthy plants everywhere.  An estimated 1/3 of all foods and beverages is delivered by pollinators. In the U.S., pollination produces nearly $20 billion worth of products annually.

During Pollinator Week:

  • Look for tags on fruits, nuts, spices, and more foods that we can thank our buzzy friends for.
  • See pollinator pics by photographer and biologist Will Peterman in our stairwell. Will has used his knowledge of bee vision to create photographs that capture a little of how bees see the world.
  • Watch our screening of The Guardians on Thursday evening. It’s a beautiful film that tells the story of humans and nature in parallel, told through the perspectives of an indigenous Mexican community and the threatened monarch butterflies they share a forest with.
  • Meet folks from Host Defense, the mushroom supplement company behind Give Bees a Chance, a research project to fight the decline of honeybees, on Saturday from 11:00-1:00.
  • Support the Common Acre’s research into the pollinators of the Puget Sound region through their Meet the Bees campaign.
