The June 15th opening of our N Pearl St store was a rousing success, with around three thousand people showing up to see the store and celebrate with us! It was an incredible day of connection between the community and the co-op, shoppers and staff, consumers and suppliers, and between neighbors, too. Best yet, over 200 people became members during our first weekend open!
The day kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring inspiring words from former Tacoma Food Co-op board president Rob More, Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce President Tom Pierson, our CEO Catherine Willis Cleveland, and Mayor Victoria Woodards (who also became our first customer!). It culminated in the cutting of a lovely, vegetative ribbon and the crowd of several hundred swarming into the store to take their first look.
In addition to exploring the store, attendees were treated to grilled sausages from Uli’s Famous Sausage and grilled corn from Organically Grown Company, while the kids enjoyed exquisite face painting by Micaela’s Fancy Faces Face Painting and petting pygmy goats from Animal Encounters. Our DJ was Peter Wright of Wright Weddings while Obe Quarless serenaded the crowd with his steel pan drums.
Throughout the day suppliers came to share their wares, including locals like Bluebeard Coffee, Mountain Muesli, KombuchaYum, Iggy’s Alive & Cultured, and Flying Cow Creamery, plus national brands like Equal Exchange, Wild Planet, Strauss Meats and HIPPEAS.
A huge thanks to everyone who came to show their support! We couldn’t have asked for a better launch to the new store and we’re excited to once again be able to serve the Tacoma area community!
