Indie Month: Wellness and Bodycare Innovators Show the Power of Independence

Indie Month continues at Central Co-op, when we celebrate how independent business benefit our communities through innovation and values-based practices.

The stories of so many products in our Wellness Departments begin with someone who wanted something better and decided to make it themselves. There's Jim Rimer of Biokleen mixing up non-toxic cleaners in his garage, Emil Bronner of Dr. Bronner's reviving his family tradition of soap making in a new country, Luke and Lisa of Herban Cowboy cooking up after shave balm in their rustic cabin, Jess Hoffman making his first bar of Grandpa’s Pine Tar Soap from his own recipe on the family farm in the 1870s and on and on.

Indie makers have the option of putting other values before the bottom line. Eliza and Chris Morris founded Island Thyme so that they could grow the plants they use in their hand-made bodycare products on their own farm in the San Juan islands, while Olowo-n’djo Tchala and Prairie Rose Hyde created Alaffia specifically to provide safe, efficacious hair, face and body care while alleviating poverty in West Africa.
